Hello HR Person.

You probably have a lot of candidates to review. Thank you for taking the look at my portfolio. If you're familiar with the skills and knowledge needed for instructional design, curriculum design, or learning and development, please check out the Training section of my portfolio.

If you're not familiar with the role I've applied for and the terminology used, you may not know Camtasia is a video editing software or Skilljar is an LMS. So if you need more information than what's in my resume, here's a quick rundown of some knowledge and skills you may be looking for in a candidate's portfolio and which I have.

"But you don't have experience with (insert subject here)."

A sewing needle works the same on a doll's dress or a Met Gala gown. It's simply a tool to help you reach your end goal regardless of the material provided.

Similarly, instructional designers can create effective learning content regardless of the topic, as long as resources and documentation are provided. That's why we work with subject matter experts (SMEs).

Ambiguous Environments

I appreciate structure and can follow procedures and guidelines. But I often worked on self-directed projects, which was basically being told, "We want this to happen, but we've never done it before or aren't sure how." I was provided with a lot of flexibility, which often expanded my role.

You'll see that in some of my job titles. A web content coordinator job, who simply posted text on a website, became a digital media director role, responsible for social media management, mobile apps, revamping a website, and coordinating live streams.

In another job, I started as a senior writer. But as I created videos, as well as social media content, that role transitioned to a multimedia journalist. I can and have taken on new challenges and pivoted when necessary.

Why include the sections not related to training on this portfolio?

The job titles are different, but the skills used are the same.

I worked in news and television production for more than a decade. That requires a high level of communications skills - written, verbal, and visual. These workplaces are also fast-paced environments where I was constantly learning and building collaborative relationships.

In addition to writing, social media management involves using graphic design skills and providing customer support. You need to identify your audience and the best way to provide them information.

When managing web content, I worked on multiple content management systems, which means I'm familiar with HTML and CSS. I also created infographics, which can also be used in training content.

Overall, I've used a lot of different tools to create and publish content. And now with a master's degree in educational technology, I apply learning theory best practices to make content effective training material.
